Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumulative trauma disorders(s) from task that they were performing engineering and administrative controls were not implemented: a) Dept. 5 - "Cellular" Manual seat adjuster area - 2nd floor modular line 2 (fourth position on line filmed) where employees who repeatedly perform the tasks of hanging and attaching springs and packing assemblies which reuire various trunk, arm and wrist postures (repetitiveness, prolonged grasp; trunk flexion and rotation, and excessive reaching) were exposed to ergonomic stresses which are likely to result in cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 8/24/89. Priority 1 - Provide a tool with a large diameter and longer handle to allow power grip. - Raise the table height to accommodate sitting. - Separate packing and the spring attachment tasks, e.g., redesign workstation to provide a buffer for the storage of parts before packing. - Provide spring-loaded stacking bins. Priority 2 - Consider mechanizing spring attachment. also - Fatigue mat is needed for worker to stand on.
