29 CFR 1910.215(b)(9): The distance between the abrasive wheel periphery(s) and the adjustable tongue or the end of the safety guard peripheral member at the top exceeded one fourth inch: Employees were exposed to caught-in and struck-by hazards. Employees engaged in cleaning/deburring activities using the pedestal grinders were exposed to caught-in and struck-by hazards in that the distance between the abrasive wheel periphery(s) and the adjustable tongue openings were not maintained at a maximum of one-fourth inch. Employees in the shop were exposed to injury in the event of wheel failure of the bench grinders at the following: a) Assembly Area (Front Shop) by the Test Stand #2 area - The distance between the left side adjustable tongue guard and the abrasive wheel periphery measured 0.5 inch for the Black and Decker #9407 - 6" Bench Grinder. b) The breeze way (intermediate area) between the Assembly Area (Front Shop) and the Machine Shop (Back Shop) by the Drill Press - The distance between the left side adjustable tongue guard and the abrasive wheel periphery measured 1.5 inches for the Dayton #17707-R - Bench Grinder. Smith & Smith Aircraft International, Ltd. has been previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 29 CFR 1910.215(b)(9) which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1210591, Citation number 1, Item number 2b, issued on 04/05/2017, with respect to a workplace located at 3738 W. 29th Street South Wichita, KS 67217, with a final order date of 04/27/2017. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is complete.
