Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 005 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks: On or about 14 February 2018, the employer failed to provide adequate machine guarding to protect operator(s) and other employees from caught-in, pinch point, and struck-by hazard(s) while operating or working near the following machines: a. The Hardinge and Cyclematic CTL-27 Lathes - The employer failed to provide adequate machine guarding such as chip or chuck guards to protect employees assigned to operate the two lathes. b. Deburring Machine - No guarding was provided to prevent the operator or other employees from inadvertently contacting the rotating parts of the machine during the operating cycle. c. National Nut Formers, #13 and #14 - The employer did not provide guarding to protect employees against inadvertent contact with the moving parts of the machine. This exposed employees to struck-by, pinch points, and caught-in hazards. d. National Bolt Maker #17 and #19 - The machines did not have guarding to protect employees against inadvertent contact with moving parts. Employees were exposed to in-running pinch points where the spool of material is drawn into the machine during the operating cycle. e. Multi Head Drill Press - The machine did not have a guard to protect employees from inadvertent exposure to the point of operation during operating cycles while hand feeding and operating the machine with a foot trip switch. The employees were directed to place part into the machine and press the foot pedal, which activates pneumatic jaws that hold the part in place while the drill press lowers. f. Waterbury Thread Roller #9 - The employer did not guard the machine to prevent employees from inadvertently contacting moving parts during the operating cycle. Abatement documentation is required in accordance with the 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
