Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 004 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious phusical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of severe burns and multiple traumatic injuries resulting from equipment failures due to the lack of preventive maintenance for all casting equipment. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish normal preventive maintenance procedures for all casting equipment, including but not limited to, the furnace(s), temperature gauges, water pressure gauges, hydraulic cylinder(s), platen(s), water pump(s), casting controls and calibration of readouts on control panel(s), billet and slab molds, pit(s) and tank(s). NOTE: The employer is not limited to the abatement method suggested above, the method explained is general and may not be effective in all cases.
