Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumulative trauma disorder(s) from tasks that they were performing; engineering and administrative controls were not implemented. a) Dept. 6 - Electric seat adjuster motor assembly (ninth position on line 1 filmed) where employees who repeatedly perform the task of plugging assemblies into electric assist units and also inserting cables which require various trunk, arm, wrist, and hand postures (excessive reaching/lifting of assembly in trunk flexion; excessive pinch grasp) were exposed to ergonomic stresses likely to cause cumulative trauma. On or about 8/17/89. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: Priority 1 - Redesign cable casing. - Redesign glove type. Priority 2 - Redesign work space to allow sitting or standing. - Provide swiveling height adjustable chair with foot rest. Priority 3 - Redesign work station to include a buffer to let the work be self-paced.
