29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1): Each employee in an excavation was not protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with paragraph (b) or (c) of this section. a) On March 31, 2021, the employer did not protect each worker by ensuring the employees stayed working within the confines of a correctly installed and used trench shield or other protective system. Employees worked outside of the trench shield to install water line in a trench at a depth ranging from 8.0 to 10.0 feet with vertical walls. Knife River Corporation, dba Knife River was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1358224, citation number 1, item number 1b and was affirmed as a final order on 4/4/2019, with respect to a workplace located on 3rd Avenue and Main Street in Lava Hot Springs, ID.
