29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. The employer does not protect each employee during use of band saws, roll formers and stapling machines by not covering the point of operation with a guard. a. 4400 S. Packers - Department # 7 - On or about September 23, 2014, the ingoing nip point on the automatic roll former # 2, was not guarded, thereby exposing employees to amputation type hazards. b. 4400 S. Packers - Department # 7 - On or about September 23, 2014, the ingoing nip point on the automatic roll former at end of mechanical power press # 103, was not guarded, thereby exposing employees to amputation type hazards. c. 4400 S. Packers - Maintenance Shop - On or about September 23, 2014, the unused portion of the Atherton band saw, Serial # 29940, was not guarded, thereby exposing employees to amputation type hazards. d. 4400 S. Packers - On or about September 23, 2014, the employer did not guard the rotating wheels on the side of three unidentifiable or unmarked box staplers, thereby exposing employees to amputation type hazards. e. 4000 S. Racine - On or about September 23, 2014, the employer did not guard the rotating wheels on the side of three unidentifiable or unmarked box staplers, thereby exposing employees to amputation type hazards. Edsal Manufacturing Co., Inc. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 1910.212(a)(1) which was contained in OSHA violation number 313940553, citation number 1, item number 2, issued on March 29, 2011, and became final order on or about April 20, 2011, with respect to a workplace located at 4400 S. Packers Avenue, Chicago, IL 60609.
