Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumlative trauma disorder(s) from tasks that they were performing; engineering and administrative controlswere not implemented: a) Dept. 6 - Electric seat adjuster motor assembly (eighth position on line 1 filmed) where employees who repeatedly perform the task of plugging assemblies into electric assist units and also inserting cables which require various trunk, arm, wrist and hand postures (trunk rotation and lifting while flexed and twisted; static holding; wrist rotations while pinching; ulnar deviation and forearm pronation while inserting the plug(s); repetitiveness of wrist rotations) were exposed to ergonomic stresses likely to cause cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 8/17/89. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: Priority 1 - Redesign cable casing. - Redesign glove type. Priority 2 - Redesign work space to allow sitting or standing. - Provide swiveling height adjustable chair with foot rest. Priority 3 - Redesign work station to include a buffer to let the work be self-paced.
