Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that on June 11, 1994, at the Consolidated Plastics addition, employee #2 was exposed to the hazards of broken bones, severe cuts and/or death while setting bundles of steel decking weighing approximately 5,000 lbs. each on unsecured and unbridged joists 41' 6" long. The hazards can be abated by, but not limited to, a program including the following criteria: (1)Assure that all joists are secured/selded at their assigned position and all bridging installed prior to loads of any description placed on them. (2)Follow the manufacturers recommendations, warnings and instructions for storage, handling and installing steel joists and briding. (3)Install all joists and briding as per the American Joists Institutes handling and erection procedure. (4)Train all employees on the above handling and erection procedures. (5)Enforce and document compliance with the above procedures.
