Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recogn ized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing injuries: Employees working in the Pellet Mill and South Mill were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a load suspended from the cranes located above the hoppers b ecause the cranes were not marked with the rated load. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to mark the c ranes with the rated load in accordance with ASME B30.11-2004, American Society of Mechanical Engineers for Monorails and Underhung Cranes, Chapter 11-1 and establish and follow a program of frequent and periodic inspections of the crane and hoist systems in accordance with ASME B30.11-2004, American Society of Mechanical Engineers for Monorails and Underhung Cranes, Chapter 11-2 and ASME B30.16-2003, American Society of Mechanical Engineers for Overhead Hoists (Under hung), Chapter 16-2. ***Abatement documentation is required for this item in acc ordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d)***
