Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occuaptional Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling down the freight elevator hoistway if the hoistway door was inadvertently opened from the land side: a) Freight Elevator, Fifth Floor: The hoistway opening at the Fifth floor landing was not adequately protected, in that, the hoistway door did not have mechanical/electrical interlocks, and an employee could inadvertently open the door without the freight elevator car in the landing zone. The feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to equip the hoistway door interlocks as specified in Rule 111.b of the American National Safety Code for Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators and Moving Walks ANSI A17.1.
