Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire and explosion hazard: (a) AMPAL, INC., aluminum atomizing collectin towers Numbers 1 and 2, employees collecting samples form the towers while the atomizing process is in operation were exposed to potential injuries from fire and explosion in that the aluminum dust level in the conveying system was above the minimum explosive concentration, on or about February 5, 1991. AMONG OTHER METHODS, SOME FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE: 1) Provide an inert gas explosion prevention system in portions of the penumatic conveying system where the concentration of light metal powder is or may be within the explosive range. 2) Provide a remotely operated sampling procedure which provides for employee positioning during sampling away from the potential explosion hazard.
