Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a) Employees were exposed to the hazards of a possible fire or explosion on or about October 4, 1988 where tank trucks containing flammable vapors were being cleaned inside the building with the use of spark producing tools and equipment. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatment method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Use only non-spark producing tools such as shovels, scrapers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc., 2) Use only approved flashlights that are acceptable for Class I locations. 3) Disconnect and remove vacuum pump battery on tank truck before cleaning is performed.
