Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CONFINED
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)On or about February 26, 1997, and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to the hazards of asphyxiation in that employees entered confined spaces (new and existing sewer manholes) without testing first being done to determine whether there was an accumulation of toxic or flammable contaminants or an oxygen deficiency. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means for abating this condition include testing the atmosphere within the confined space and establishing and implementing confined space entry procedures such as stipulated by ANSI Z117.1-1995, Safety Requirements for Confined Spaces.
