Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing cumulative trauma disorder(s) from tasks that they were performing; engineering and administrative controls were not implemented: a) Dept. 6 - Electric seat adjuster motor assembly (fourth position on line 1 filmed) where employees who repeatedly perform the task of inserting metal slips with a magnetic hand tool which requires various arm, wrist and hand postures (force, asymmetrical shoulders; elbow flexion; wrist deviation and extension; palm grip and finger guidance) were exposed to ergonomic stresses which are likely to result in cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 8/17/89. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: Priority 1 - Change the tool handle to a power grip handle. - Provide looser gloves with palm padding. Priority 2 - Provide foot railing. - Provide fatigue mat. - Consider redesigning the product to change the location of the clip on the assembly. Priority 3 - Tilt line towards operator.
