Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employer failed to provide adequate guarding for the freight elevator shaft exposing to the hazard of falling into the open shaft: a) Warehouse - freight elevator shaft extending upward five (5) floors down to the basement; 10-18-89 AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO GUARD ELEVATOR HOISTWAY OPENINGS TO THE FULL HEIGHT AND WIDTH OF THEIR ENTRANCES.
