Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were required to perform tasks resulting in stressors that had caused, were causing, or were likely to cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs): a) Amazon.com Services, LLC - MDW8 located at 1750 Bridge Drive in Waukegan, IL: On or about July 18, 2022, the employer's employees were exposed to an ergonomic hazard, which was causing or likely to cause increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Amazon failed to sufficiently implement its policies regarding the use of tilt-�push-slide techniques, pallet jacks, or team lifts in the TV Sort process path on the Outbound Ship dock, thereby increasing the risk of low back strains. Among other methods, each of the following feasible and acceptable methods of abatement would eliminate or materially reduce the hazard: (1) Implementation of a comprehensive ergonomics program that includes each of the following elements: (A) Designation of a Site Ergonomic Lead (SEL) who has completed ergonomics awareness and risk assessment training; (B) Employees working in the TV Sort process path on the Outbound Ship dock have completed or are scheduled to complete ergonomics awareness training as part of the onboarding process; (C) Preparation of a Site Ergonomic Risk Assessment based on the General Risk Assessment (GRA) and the Technical Risk Assessment (TRA) (where applicable) for the TV Sort process path; (D) Site leadership and the SEL have the ability to work with the corporate ergonomics team to develop ways to mitigate ergonomic risk factors at the site; and (E) Employees have the ability to communicate concerns regarding ergonomic risk factors through systems for employee feedback maintained by Respondent, including but not limited to direct communications with the Associate Safety Committee ("ASC") or use of Respondent's anonymous ethics hotline. (2) Implementing existing policies regarding use of the tilt-push-slide technique to move items weighing 50 pounds or more; In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of abatement, or other written records. (3) Implementing existing policies regarding use of pallet jacks or other material handling devices to move items weighing 50 pounds or more; ( 4) Implementing existing policies regarding use of team lifts.
