Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: SMALL ASSEMBLY AREA: Employees, who operated the Ridgid "500 A" pipe threading machine, were exposed to the hazard of rotating pipe. The employer did not ensure that a foot switch was installed on the machine so that the operator was provided with a safe means to shut off the power to the rotating chuck. The hand switch to the pipe threading machine was located anywhere between 4 and 7 feet from the operator, depending on the length of the pipe being processed. Among other methods to correct the hazard, one feasible and acceptable abatement method would be to install a foot switch for the "500 A" pipe threading machine as recommended by the manufacturer in their publication #TF-535-74-R.
