Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling overhead hazards: (a) In the Boxline #2 area next to sorting tables, employee(s) were exposed to physical injuries created by packages/boxes weighing between 1 pound and 70 pounds falling out of the top boxline cage approximately 98 inches to 128 inches to the work floor below. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to use spill guards, pan guards or the equivalent to prevent or contain packages/boxes from falling into the work area below as recommended by ASME B20.1-1990. (b) In the North Center area, employee(s) unloading packages/boxes on Return Belt #2 were exposed to physical injuries created by packages/boxes weighing between 1 pound and 70 pounds falling off overhead conveyors approximately 14 feet to the work area below. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to increase the sides of the current side pans, use spill guards or the equivalent to prevent packages/boxes from falling into the work area below as recommended by ASME
