Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: PUNCTURE
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to puncture wounds, lacerations, and impalement due to the protrusion of steel pins, metal conduit, brackets and supports: In the following instances employees were exposed to puncture, laceration, and impalement hazards: a)Blast #2, Unit 333 - At numerous locations throughout the unit insulation pins, studs, and brackets that protruded into the work space were not protected. b)Hull 470, Missile Deck - Eight conduit ends or stuffing tubes that protruded into the work space were not protected. c)Hull 470, Middle Cross Passage - One conduit end or stuffing tube that protruded into the work space was not protected. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to install covers over these protrusions, which will reduce the likelihood of puncture wounds to the head, body and limbs. Your company was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard which was contained in OSHA inspection No. 301664678, Citation Number 1, Item Number 1, issued on 09/22/1999.
