Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Being struck by a moving motor vehicle capable of causing fractures, crushing injuries to internal organs, and death. Employees placed wiring harnesses in a van's engine compartment while the vehicle behind was driven toward it and the brakes applied to perform a "spike" test. Should the test van fail to stop due to mechanical failure or driver error, it would strike the front van. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to move the "spike" test to a location away from other employees.
