Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Hazard of employees being exposed to falls from ladders and platforms while working elevated on semi-trailers in that un- expected lateral movement would dislodge the ladder or platform. One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to institute a system of warning alarms that may be suplemented with flashing lights or similar visual warning in accordance with ANSI B20.1-1984, American Institute Standards Institute. The warning devices should be actuated by the conveyor controller for a specific period of time before the conveyor starts, allowing employees sufficient time to clear the area. It MUST be required that the person controlling the conveyor wait the required period of time before the conveyor is moved forward. Employees affected by this procedure and those authorized to control the conveyor area to be trained in its usage and an enforcement program implemented to assure adherence. This stand- ard was cited as Citation 1, Item 1 on Inspection 103297719 dated 10/24/90-10/30/90.
