Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of being caught between the elevator floor and the bottom of the elevator pit or falling into the elevator pit due to the employer not providing complete operational doors or gates with interlocking devices on the personnel/freight elevator located on the first floor of the plant. Among other methods of abatement, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this condition is: Install interlocking type gate guards that must be in the closed position for the elevator to operate. This standard was cited on Inspection 102503174 which became a final order on January 10, 1990.
