Text For Citation: 02 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of the Weaver Semi-Hydraulic, Single Column Automotive Lift, with a leak causing the lift to drop every 3 minutes. Automotive shop mechanics were exposed to the potential hazards of the automotive lift dropping, which could cause serious physical harm. Safety devices were inoperable, without the use of the safety devices, the hoist could drop, crushing someone underneath. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish and implement inspection, maintenance, and operating procedures in accordance with the automotive lift manufacturers instructions. 1) Daily inspection before use and after repair with the original equipment parts. 2) Periodic inspection of the lift as recommended by the manufacturer to ensure all components are in safe operating condition. 3) To insure the automatic mechanical safety device is operable to hold the lift in the fully extended position at rated load capacity. 4) Lubrication and other preventive maintenance measures. 5) Proper care and use. 6) Repair leak in system before using lift.
