Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an increased risk of developing CTD from tasks that they were performing and engineering and administrative controls were not implemented: The third of three employees in department 17, group 04, job 04, shift 01, CUSHION BOLSTER who repeatedly performs tasks which require various ergonomic stresses such as, but not limited to, excessive shoulder abduction and wrist radial and ulnar deviation for the tool hand/arm; excessive shoulder abduction, extreme repetitive wrist flexion and extension as the worker pushes the cushion down, and some tight gripping in the opposite hand/arm which are likely to result in cumulative trauma disorders. On or about 11-8-89. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Use of a clamping device, either automatic or manually operated to press the cushions down. 2) Alter work height and angle to eliminate postural problems associated with this task.
