29 CFR 1910.305(g)(1)(iv)(A) Flexible cords were used as permanent wiring of a s tructure. The employer does not insure that all electrical equipment is approved for use. A relocatable power tap, or power strip, is affixed to the wall of a storage bui lding and used as a substitute for the fixed wiring of the building. On or about 05/18/10 CSHO observed a 110 VAC power strip, with a SJTW usage cord, being use d to energize lights and power tools. It was located near the cooling towers. Th is condition is a hazard of electrical shock to employees. Pursuant to 29 CFR 19 03.19, within ten (10) calendar days of the date of this citation, the employer must submit documentation that it is in compliance with the standard, including describing the steps it is taking to ensure employees are not exposed to this el ectrical hazard. One method of abatement among others is to remove the power str ip and plug extension cords directly into the fixed wiring of the building. Note : Only extra-hard usage cords can be used in Class 1, Division 1 and 2 areas as per the National Electric Code.
