29 CFR 1910.157(c)(4) The employer did not assure that portable fire extinguishe rs are maintained in a fully charged and operable condition and kept in their de signated places at all times except during use. The employer does not maintain f ire extinguishing equipment in an operable condition. Employees who are required to use the extinguishers are exposed to fire and expl osion hazards as a result of flames that may spread rapidly. This exposes employ ees to fire and explosion hazards. This violation was observed in the Platformer Unit on or about May 05, 2010 when discharged fire extinguishers were found. Eq uipment found to be defective are located as follows: A.Ansul Model LR-30-D Fire Extinguisher at the top of the Number 1 Platformer Separator. B.Ansul Model LR- 30-D Fire Extinguisher near the Number 2 Platformer Stabilizer Overhead Accumula tor. Pursuant to 29 C. F. R. 1903.19, within ten (10) calendar days of the date of this citation, the employer must submit documentation that it is in complianc e with the standard, including describing the steps it is taking to ensure employees are not exposed to this fire hazard. One method of abatement among others is to remove and repla ce the discharged fire extinguishers.
