29 CFR 1910.252(c)(1)(iii): Maximum allowable concentration. Local exhaust or general ventilating systems shall be provided and arranged to keep the amount of toxic fumes, gases, or dusts below the maximum allowable concentration as specified in 1910.1000 of this part. On or about May 17, 2021, and times prior thereto, throughout the facility, the ventilation was not sufficient to keep concentrations below the permissible exposure limits (PEL) for copper fume during welding activities. a) Employees were exposed to copper fume while welding on steel sheets at an 8-hour TWA of 0.15 mg/m3, approximately 1.5 times the permissible exposure limit of 0.1 mg/m3. The exposure was derived from one sample collected over 477 minutes, zero exposure was assumed of 3 minutes period not sampled.
