29 CFR 1910.265(c)(26)(viii): Guarding lower landing area. The lower landing area of stackers and unstackers shall be guarded by enclosures that prevent entrance to the area or pit below the hoist platform. Entrances should be protected by electrically interlocked gates which, when open, will disconnect the power and set the hoist brakes. When the interlock is not installed, other positive means of protecting the entrance shall be provided. At an establishment located at 121 Cedar Street, in Tigerton, Wisconsin; in the Planing/Stacking Building: (a) On or about July 19, 2023, employees working near the Mellott Tilt Table leading to the infeed planer were exposed to struck-by, crushed-by, and pinch point hazards created by the lumber arms raising and lowering. There was no form of machine guarding to prevent employees and operators from accessing the danger zones during operation. (b) On or about July 19, 2023, employees working near the Mellott Stacker machine were exposed to struck-by, crushed-by, and pinch point hazards created by the lumber elevator to the grading table and the stacking lift table. There was only a chain and sign at a door access point to prevent employees and operators from accessing the danger zones during operation.
