29 CFR 1910.1026(f)(1)(i): Feasible engineering controls and work practices were not instituted to reduce and maintain employee exposures to chromium (VI) at or below the permissible exposure limit: a. Rear Yard, Stainless Steel Scrap Burn Area - The employer did not use engineering and work practice controls, such as, local exhaust ventilation (portable local exhaust, such as a "snorkel" exhaust system) or water sprays or mobile hydraulic shears, to reduce and maintain employee exposure to chromium (VI) to levels that were at or below the PEL. An employee, conducting the torch burning of stainless steel scrap, was exposed to 8-hour Time Weighted Average (TWA) of 0.019 milligrams per cubic meter of airborne hexavalent chromium during a 436 minutes occupational exposure. The 8-hour TWA employee exposure was 3.8 times respectively the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 0.005 milligrams per cubic meter. The violation was noted on March 7, 2019.
