29 CFR 1910.219(c)(3): Guarding vertical and inclined shafting. Vertical and inclined shafting seven (7) feet or less from floor or working platform, excepting maintenance runways, shall be enclosed with a stationary casing in accordance with requirements of paragraphs (m) and (o) of this section. a. On or about February 7, 2017, located in the mold repair shop, employees operated a King Mill from King Machine Tool Division, Serial Number 3291 that had a two vertical shafts that were not guarded between 34 to 58 inches above the floor to prevent employee contact with the rotating vertical shafts, exposing the employees to a caught-in/struck-by hazard. b. On or about February 8, 2017, in the ladle repair area, the southernmost wall mounted Neptune mortar mixer had an unguarded vertical rotating shaft, thereby exposing employees to a caught-in hazard. The unguarded vertical shaft was approximately 34 inches from the floor level.
