29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. On or about 22 February 2017, the employer failed to ensure that guarding was provided to protect their workers from inadvertently contacting rotating conveyor rollers on the: a. BT209: Trash line, damaged and open drive guard b. BT209: Trash line, missing bottom hitch roller guard. Two plates were missing/damaged that exposed rotating parts at the bottom hitch roller and drive mechanism during operation. This exposed the employees to ingoing nip points and caught-in hazards. Abatement documentation is not required for this item.
