Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 006B Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: On or about October 8, 2004 the employer did not ensure that the work platform used by employees to perform maintenance of overhead gantry cranes was secured to the powered industrial truck. The lifting guides located under the work platform measured approximately 5 1/2 inches wide and the forks on the Clarklift 12,000 lbs. powered industrial truck, CHY 120 53 603 864 measured 6" wide nor was the work platform secured to the lifting carriage. Employee was exposed to a fall hazard of approximately 15 feet to the concrete floor below. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Secure work platform to the lifting carriage of/or forks in accordance with ASME B56.1-2000. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
