Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 006 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts and crushing hazards: a) Germination & Kilning Vessels (GKV1 & GKV2): On or before October 23, 2023, and on previous dates, the employer did not protect employees from the hazards, such as entanglement, posed by rotating parts such as the vertical helices and the horizontal sweep augur, equipment mounted on the rotating turner arm (RTA), by providing adequate machine guarding to prevent employees from potential serious injury, such as, but not limited to, an amputation sustained when an employee walking in the wet barley grain is collecting barley samples out of the germinating or kilning barley in a germination and kilning vessel. Note: The OSHA standard, General requirements for all machines, 29 CFR 1910.212, describes example of machine guarding methods as barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc.
