Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to amputation hazards: (a) On or before February 28, 1998, the #4 hydraulic pill press, located in the pill press area, did not have an adequate stop button in that the stop button located in the front of the press next to the start button had been disconnected and the stop button on the control panel could not be activated in an emergency in that the plastic door covered access to the button when the side guard of the press was open. American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B11.2-1982, paragraph 3.4.1.1 states: "A means of stopping the motion of all press slide(s) shall be provided. Actuation of the stop control shall deactivate immediately all press controls. The stop control shall override any other control." Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to replace the stop button on the front of the press.
