29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a) On or about January 5, 2022, employees operating the Viking Engineering & Development Inc. Champion #4 pallet machine located in the assembly department were exposed to struck by and pinch point hazards created by the unguarded portion of the traveling carriage. b) On or about January 5, 2022, employees operating the Viking Engineering & Development Inc. Champion #1 pallet machine located in the assembly department were exposed to struck by and pinch point hazards created by the unguarded portion of the traveling carriage. c) On or about January 5, 2022, employees operating the Automated Machine Systems De-stacking Machine located in the repair line were exposed to pinch point and crushed by hazards created by the unguarded conveyor mechanism's vertical motion to retrieve pallets from the stack. d) On or about January 5, 2022, employees operating the Trim Saw #2 located on the Repair line were exposed to ingoing nip points and entanglement hazards from unguarded chain and sprockets on the chain conveyor. e) On or about January 5, 2022, employees operating the Trim Saw #2 located on the Repair line were exposed to ingoing nip points from the #7 conveyor unguarded belt and pulley.
