29 CFR 1960.8(a): The Agency head did not furnish employment and a place of employment to each employee that were free from recognized hazards that caused or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to mycotoxins from mold in the microbiology laboratory: (a) At Bldg. 500, Microbiology Lab - On or about 1/12/12, and at times prior thereto, the employer did not provide a place of employment free from the recognized hazard of mycotoxins from mold, which are likely to cause serious physical harm to employees. Employees had developed respiratory illness including allergies and persistent and worsening asthma with continued exposure to these specific strains of mold (Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Alternaria, and Fusarium). Feasible and acceptable means of abatement include but are not limited to: a) Eliminate water intrusion through the roof and ceiling; (b) Regular inspection and maintenance of refrigerator to identify and repair drips and leaks; (c) Regular cleaning of refrigerator surfaces to prevent excessive mold growth; (d) Regular cleaning of laboratory floors to minimize disturbance of mold spores from foot traffic; (e) Using air purifiers with HEPA; (f) Using a mold remediation company to sanitize the refrigerator, as needed.
