Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 005 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of a molten metal explosion: a) Standing water on the floor in the Litharge Department on 12/8/88 increased the risk of employee death or injury from a molten metal explosion in the event of a spill or leak from the Kupel furnace. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to modify the door sills leading to the Litharge Department to prevent seepage of water into the building and establish a maintenance program to prevent water build-up in the area.
