29 CFR 1910.119(j)(4)(iii): The frequency of inspections and tests of process equipment to maintain its mechanical integrity, was not consistent with applicable manufacturer's recommendations and good engineering practices, or more frequently determined to be necessary by prior operating experience. The two rotary furnace pits in the heat treat department at 106 Lonczak Drive Chicopee, MA: On or about April 15, 2016, the employer did not perform inspections or tests of the Scott Instruments Sentinel II series 7200, gas detection system. The manufacturer's owner's manual for the gas detection system which recommends a sensor response test be conducted periodically to ensure the sensor continues to respond to the gas it is designed to be monitoring for as well as the sensors be visually inspected for dirt buildup or condensation. The manufacturer also informs users that the sensors are not repairable if excessive dirt buildup is present. Lastly, the manufacturer recommends a calibration after the initial installation, after replacing the transmitter, the sensor, detector or any circuit assemblies as well as once per week for the first month of use and then monthly thereafter.
