Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 004A Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or about January 4, 2024, at the U.S. Industrial Machinery Hydraulic Shear, Model US825, the employer did not ensure that the machine's finger guard was lowered into position when employees operated the machine during production to cut small aluminum parts. The raised guard and disabled safety switch exposed employees to the pinch point hazards located under the hold down springs and the knife blades of the shear. b. On or about January 11, 2024, at the Nisshinbo HIQ-1250 CNC Punch Press, the employer did not ensure that employees were protected from being struck by the moving steel table while the machine is in operation and/or caught between the moving table and the safety railing near the exit of the operator's station. c. On or about January 11, 2024, at the #635 Clausing Drill Press, Model # 1765, the employer did not ensure that employees were protected from contacting the rotating chuck and/or struck by flying shavings while operating the press.
