Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 004 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer does not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from the recognized hazard of being struck by billets or other material being transported by a structural lifting device that has become damaged. This violation was observed on or about November 4, 2010, in the Production area where employees were exposed to being struck by billet material that was being transported through the facility by a structurally deformed spreader bar frame. Among other feasible methods to correct the identified hazard, one method would be to perform frequent inspections to identify damage to the structural lifting device and make the necessary repairs as per ASME B30.20 - 2006 Below the Hook Lifting Devices, Paragraph 20-1.3.3 and 20-1.3.9(b)(6) Pursuant to 29 C.F.R. 1903.19, within ten (10) calendar days of the abatement date, the employer must submit documentation describing the actions it is taking to ensure that all structural lifting devices are inspected and repaired when necessary. Disclaimers: 1. You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2. The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3. The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
