Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 004 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to caught-between hazards: a)A-Du Well Auto Salvage & 5135 Emerson St. in Denver, CO: The employer did not ensure the job-made base-mounted drum hoist was rated, constructed, inspected, maintained, and operated in accordance with the specifications of ASME B30.1-2001. This condition exposed employees to caught-between hazards. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to perform the following: ASME B30.7-2001, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Base-Mounted Drum Hoists. Deficiencies per this document include all sections of Chapters 7-1, 7-2, and 7-3 addressing items such as but not limited to: 1)Absence of load ratings, 2)Absence of markings (load rating, drum size, rope size, rated power supply); 3)Improper hoist and swinger mechanisms; 4)Braking systems; 5)Absence of guards; 6)Inspections of hoist, frames, welds, and ropes; 7)Testing of equipment; 8)Maintenance of equipment; and 9)Conditions set for operators.
