Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which we re free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or se rious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to the hazards of burns from unprotected heated surfaces and exposed flames as well as burns fr om fire and explosion from unapproved space heaters: (a)On or about May 4, 2005, QC area/old welding shop, the 'salamanda' type heater sitting on the floor next to the south wall was not protected to prevent exposure to the hot metal shell of the heater and from the potential dangers of damage to the gas regulator that was located on the very bottom of the heater where it was being stepped on and walked on by the employees. (b)On or about May 18, 2005, the field manufactured heater used to heat the flux container at the Spin Cast furnace had unprotected heated surfaces, flames prot ruding from the gas heating device, around the container and was not provided wi th a safety valve which would turn the gas off in the event of a flame failure. (c)On or about May 18, 20205, the unapproved, field manufactured heater on the f loor of the spin cast area was a five gallon bucket, that was turned upside down over a gas flame, that was not provided through an approved safety valve which would turn the gas off in the event of a flame failure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to remove th e unapproved heaters from service and replace them with UL approved heaters.
