Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard due to being caught in nip points along the belt conveyor when cleaning the belt area while the belt is in motion: a) Aisco Unit - The spill sand belt conveyor was not provided with an emergency pull cord to stop the belt conveyor in the event an employee was caught in the nip points along the conveyor during cleaning operations when the belt is in operation. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Provide an emergency pull cord along the entire length of the belt conveyor. Reference ANSI B.20.1, Section 5.11.2(c), 1987. 2. When proper cleaning requires the conveyor to be in motion and a hazard exists, personnel should be made aware of the associated hazards. Reference ANSI B.20.1, Section 5.12(j), 1987. 3. Personnel working on or near a conveyor shall be instructed as to the location and operation of pertinent stopping devices. Reference ANSI B.20.1, Section 5.12(e), 1987.
