Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003B Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries: (a)Middle Crane. The Euclid underhung crane was in operation without a limit switch. (b)Machine Shop. Adjustments were not made to the limit switch on the Robbins & Myers underhung crane, located next to the freight elevator, to assure correct functioning. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS to inspect the cranes and correct any unsafe conditions disclosed by the inspection before operation of the crane is resumed.
