29 CFR 1910.138(b): The employer did not base the selection of the appropriate hand protection on an evaluation of the performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to the task(s) to be performed, conditions present, duration of use, and the hazards and potential hazards identified: (a) Ark Woodworks Inc, at 878 Baseline Place, Brighton, CO: On and preceding 4/4/16, the employer did not base the selection of the appropriate hand protection on an evaluation of the performance characteristics of the hand protection relative to the task(s) to be performed, conditions present, duration of use, and the hazards and potential hazards identified. One employee sprayed Sherwin Williams Sher-Wood Water Conversion Varnish (containing xylene, ethyl benzene, and formaldehyde) on millwork or other wood products in the spray paint booth, mixed varnishes and stains, and used lacquer thinner to clean the spray gun. The employee wore SAS Safety Corp Thickster Latex Exam Gloves when performing these operations. Latex exam gloves do not provide adequate protection from contact with organic solvents, such as xylene or lacquer thinner. This condition exposed the employee to a chemical hazard.
