Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential amputation hazard or other injury: (a) For employees operating the freight elevator and exposed to the potential for injury created by the lack of a guard at the basement level elevator landing. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the requirements set forth in ANSI/ASME A17.1-1984 Rule 110.1: Entrances and Emergency Doors Required. All elevators, hoistway landing openings shall be provided with an entrance which shall guard the full height and width of the openings. This company was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health standard or its equivalent standard which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 102763000, Citation Number 1, Item Number 4B, issued on 04/12/2002.
