Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003A Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing injuries due to unguarded wheels on rubber tired mobile gantry cranes: a) The 500AI Travelift was not equipped with wheel guards to guard against being struck by and run over by the wheels. Condition exposed employees to crushing injuries. b) The 500B Travelift was not equipped with wheel guards to guard against being struck by and run over by the wheels. Condition exposed employees to crushing injuries. c) The 650(002) Travelift was not equipped with wheel guards to guard against being struck by and run over by the wheels. Condition exposed employees to crushing injuries. d) The 650(003) Travelift was not equipped with wheel guards to guard against being struck by and run over by the wheels. Condition exposed employees to crushing injuries. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to install appropriate protective wheel guards; ensure that ground spotters are positioned inside "spotter cages" prior to crane movement; keep employees out of the danger zone during crane movement.
