Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003A Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1):The employer shall assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). If such hazards are present, or likely to be present, the employer shall: a) On or about March 23, 2023, the employer failed to conduct an adequate hazard assessment of the workplace. As a result, the Sanitation Workers, at Depallitizer #1, were required to clean chemicals from damaged pallets without being provided adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect their eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and lungs from corrosive liquids and toxic inhalants. The exposure to hazardous substances included, but was not limited to, Clorox Bleach (sodium hypochlorite 4.5%), The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner (hydrochloric acid 5-10%). The chemicals combined with a potential for chlorine gas to form. The hazard was last observed on March 30, 2023.
