Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of crushing and lacerating injuries resulting from the operation of a vacuum lifter which was suspended from a pendant controlled bridge crane and was being utilized to strip individual lites of jumbo glass packs in the New Warehouse while the red "no go" light on the operator's control panel was lighted. Further, vacuum pressure was still indicated on five of the six vacuum cup gauges when the vacuum lifter was deenergized after making a lift in the New Warehouse, on or about 5/15/85. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to operate the vacuum lifter following the manufacturers operating instructions written on the equipment.
